One Day with my Friends

by Armine Zakaryan, Armenia

Vanadzor youth has celebrated the international youth day on August 11, 2010, in the Vanadzor State Theater named after H. Abelyan with a photo exhibition and a concert.

The “One day with my friends” project was the first step of the three year strategy of Peace Dialogue NGO /Armenia, Vanadzor/ called “See who we are, choose who we want to be.”

Our starting point was to create a group of YOUNG key actors for change by breaking the indifference of a group of youth through organization of activities designed to stimulate interest in peace building and to empower youth for further activities in mobilizing their peers in the community.

The goals of the project were to study the interests, potential, and concerns of Vanadzor youth from their photos and to provide a space for them for creative self-realization and further involvement in the activities of Peace Dialogue NGO. In order to achieve these goals Peace Dialogue NGO itself planned to organize the Photo Contest and to exhibit the photos of the participants, but after the announcement of the photo context, the participants chose to be actively involved in the preparatory activities and started to come with their initiatives to further develop the project. From May 2010, more than forty young people were participants in the photo contest and representative of music bands in Vanadzor were involved in the organizing works. Through their contributions, it was decided to combine the exhibition with the concert. First, the idea was to organize the concert of Vanadzor rock bands, but then, step by step, it was combined with hip-hop and break-dance groups.

The preparatory activities for this project were started by Peace Dialogue NGO with the support of the NGO’s board members, NGO OWEN in Germany, and from individual contributions from German citizens.
